Joseph Maria Olbrich (1867–1908), architect and designer in Vienna and Darmstadt, studied architecture in Vienna. He was a cofounder of the Vienna Secession. In 1898 he built the Secession Exhibition Building. In 1899 he was made responsible for all architectonic aspects of the Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt, including an artists’ house. His largest and last construction assignment was the Tietz department store in Düsseldorf.
